You are welcome to visit the Heritage Centre to look at the exhibitions, simply browse, or to do your own research in the Search Room. No membership is necessary. A visit to the Centre can be a great way to learn more about your family history, or just the history of your region.
Family research is very popular, and as such our facilities are often in great demand. It is necessary to book microfilm and fiche reading equipment in advance. You will need these facilities to view items such as census returns and local newspapers. Prints can be made from microfilm and microfiche.

Copies can be made of many items in the collection, subject to copyright restrictions. We can do both colour laser copies, and traditional black and white photocopies. We can also scan some items. It is also possible to arrange for photographic prints to be made. Just ask our staff about any of these services when you visit.
Here are our fees and charges for copying, printing and research (effective 1 April 2008):

Lengthy enquiries (up to 30 minutes): £6.50
Each additional hour (or part thereof): £23.50
The following rules ensure that everyone can enjoy the facilities at the Heritage Centre, and that delicate historical documents are preserved.
1. Please sign the visitor's book on each visit.
2. Visitors are requested to turn off mobile phones.
3. You may not smoke, eat, or drink while in the library.
4. Only pencils may be used to write notes as ink marks records permanently. Battery powered computers may be used for note-taking at the discretion of the librarian.
5. All documents must be handled with care, at the tables provided, and using the protective equipment supplied.
6. All documents are for reference use only. Where material is considered suitable for copying, a staff-operated photocopying service is available.
7. No material may be copied or reproduced without permission.
8. Many records are now only available on microfilm. You will need to telephone in advance and book a reader if you wish to look at these
