The upstairs rooms in Charlton House will be closed at the end of August to enable some essential works to take place.
What’s affected – and what’s not
- Selected historic rooms upstairs in the House will be closed while essential works take place
- Friday House tours will not take place on 21st and 28th August
- Self-guided House tours will not be available between 17-28 August
- Children’s craft days will go ahead in another part of the building
- The gardens and Frilly’s Tea Room will remain open during normal hours
- The Tree Trail will be available
- The library will remain open as usual
- Pre-booked events and hires may be relocated within the building where necessary
Why these closures matter
Charlton House is a Grade 1 listed building with significant heritage value. Keeping it safe and usable requires careful, planned maintenance. These works relate to the roof, which needs to be properly assessed by a team of architects and engineers so it can be conserved.
Carolyn Ayers, Head of Estates and Conservation at Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust the charity which looks after Charlton House and Gardens, says: ‘While these closures are inconvenient, they are essential so we can properly understand the roof – how it is made, and where key repairs need to be undertaken. Our aim is that the House will be fully open from August 29th and in time for a packed Autumn programme.’
