Last week, we welcomed GACO Greenwich to Charlton House again for their annual memorial event in our Old Pond Garden.
GACO – The ‘Greenwich African Caribbean Organisation’ have held an annual memorial event in memory of Black African ancestors who lived, worked and died in the Royal Greenwich Borough during the 1600-1800s.
Standing within the Old Pond Garden at Charlton House, is a memorial tree that the ceremony takes place around and each year. For much of the year, it stands as a memorial only for those who know why it was planted but on the second Friday of August each year, an opportunity arises for anyone in the Borough to gather and commemorate those who lived, worked and died in the Borough during the 1600-1800s.
History teaches us many things. Not only the facts of events that have occurred in the past but the lessons these facts teach us about life and how we behave toward one another. In a busy world where we brush past each other, often with no time or need to consider who the person is, or their history, taking a moment to pause and reflect during a moments silence reminds us of how connected we really are.
As a Trust, we are proud to represent such a diverse and culturally rich Borough and look forward to working in conjunction with Organisations such as GACO to keep the history of the Borough, and those who have inhabited it, alive for many more years to come.
